IVVC Staff Visits Fermilab
On Monday, August 18, 2008, the entire staff of Indian Valley Vocational Center attended an in-service at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This “first day back” activity was designed to enlighten the staff on exactly what Fermilab does. After an opening session on the history of Fermilab, the staff was escorted to the 15th floor observatory where we were able to see the entire Fermilab grounds and gain a better understanding of how and where the experiments take place. The docent explained that a new “bigger mousetrap” accelerator will soon be opening in Switzerland that will take away some of the business and experiments that are currently performed at Fermilab. She went on to say that in the coming months and years, Fermilab will have to reinvent itself in order to stay a leader in the scientific research field. The entire staff came away from this event with a better understanding of how scientific research affects us on a daily basis.
